The
hobby of building and flying Radio Controlled aircraft has long
been a popular pastime in the Wausau area. In 1966, six area modelers
joined together to create the Wausau Sportsmen Club of Wausau, Wisconsin.
As membership
grew, it became apparent that association with the Academy of Model
Aeronautics (AMA), a nationally organized group of builders and
flyers, was necessary. Frequency control, insurance, and participation
in competitive events were among a few of the areas in which AMA
membership would benefit the club.
In
1977, the Wausau R/C Sportsmen were granted AMA Charter membership
#671. To this day, this Charter is maintained and AMA membership
is required for all flying members of the club. Over the years,
interest has grown substantially. As a result, the Wausau R/C Sportsmen
Club has grown to a high over 100 members - some of which are still
from that original group of six.
The types
of models flown include kit planes, helicopters, sail planes, multi-engine
creations, amphibious craft and many others. We have a Club flying
field centrally located to our members.
